for no apparent reason, my starter will make horrible grinding noises as the bendix chews up the teeth on the flywheel. Turn the key back off, and try again, and it might start, or it might grind again.
I go thru this problem intermittently, and I can't figure out why.
I have one brand new battery, and the other one is good.
I pulled the cover off the bottom of the bell housing, and there are a few chewed up spots on the teeth, but I deburred them, and even rotated the flywheel so that a bad spot was right at the starter...and the damn thing fired right up!
I know the starter came from Advance Auto Parts, and it's made in Japan...so that's prolly the first problem...
Anybody have any thoughts? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

That's the problem...
The prevous owner put a gear reduction stater on the truck, which is a 13 tooth drive (used on 85 - later).
83 - 84 F-250 diesels require a 10 tooth drive starter. You can use a 13t starter, but you need to change the flywheel...which he didn't do. What a bozo.
So, sometimes the teeth will sorta mesh and she'll start, and other times it just makes the horrible grinding noise. I have a new 10t starter coming this afternoon.
Yea,
Some people do just about anything, the last owner of my truck tore out the air-conditioning because hes said the engine overheated when it came on, fact is the radiator was working at 33% since it was plugged up, bent and almost shot!!

I was expecting a 10 tooth gear on the bendix, and this one had 12, but it came in a Motocraft box...so...
Anyway, I put it on, and it works great! I don't know how to describe it, but it actually SOUNDS a lot better than the other starter and the engine seems to fire up quicker. I barely bump the key and she's off and running.
So, I have this perfectly good 13 tooth Mitsubishi gear reduction starter that I'd be willing to make somebody a deal on. I figure why should I give NAPA a "core" that is in working order.
