starting problems

I have a 54 F100 with a 272 y block. I installed pertronics ignition a few years ago because of hard starting with points. Still hard to start when cold or if I don't start for a few days. When warm it starts ok. Runs ok great truck to drive . Could anyone have an idea if hard starting from fuel issue or ignition. Thanks in advance. Rob.

Could be quite a few things or combination of them. Easy things to check: spark quality. Should have a fat hot spark at the plugs, blue or whitish-blue. Red or yellow is no good. It's a lot easier to light off a rich fuel mixture. When it gets cold, it exposes weak ignition.

Need to see a good squirt of fuel when throttle is moved, from carburetor accelerator pump. My 292 needs several pumps if it's cold temps and hasn't been started in more than a few days.

When applied liberally down her throat, it immediately sorts whether it was fuel or ignition.

If fuel - check for vacuum leaks, try an alternate carby to eliminate variables.

If spark - Did you delete the Ballast resistor when you installed the Pertronix? Did you update to a high energy coil? Did you update to non resistor leads and plugs?? Is your timing absolutely correct?

If none of these work, you'd better fix the handbrake, then get used to parking facing down hills.

I had the same problem with the buick nailhead in my 36 ford coupe .
Found my fuel pump had a problem with the valves in it , and fuel would drain back to the tank after sitting .
Replaced the fuel pump with a new one and it's ok now .

Scott is right. If the fuel pump lets the fuel slowly flow back, then you have to crank for a while to get it to start. But it starts easy if you have run it during the last 24 hours. An electric fuel pump will help. Jag
