Fuel regulator questions

I have an 87 302 port EFI. It felt like a engine miss when traveling around 35 mph without your foot on the gas. I replaced o2 sensor, IAC, rotor, cap. The only codes was a lean indicator. I removed the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator (canister on the fuel rail) plugged the line and it's 90% better. My question is should I replace this part or do is need to check fuel pressure and vacuum pressue going to this regulator? What does this part do because it seems to run fine without it hooked up? Any help or information about this part of the fuel system would be appriciated.

Thanks.
HH

Fuel regulator questions

I would check the EGR valve to see if it may be slightly stuck open. A high vacuum signal to the regulator will drop the pressure. As you open the throttle, the manifold vacuum drops, which eases off of the regulator and increases fuel pressure. It sounds like it is working properly.
Yes I would check the fuel pressure. You should have about 32lbs at an idle(high vacuum) and around 38 to 40 with the vacuum line off of the regulator.
