The big difference is the ability to use Apple Car Play or Android Auto. I too was a bit excited to upgrade my '16 F150 from x2 to x3 and had to upgrade the USB hub in order to do so. This also cost me around $50 for the new USB hub. After all was installed I rarely use Apple Car Play I hate to use it frankly and would rather use the Ford Sync instead. The reason is that the Apple Car Play takes over your phone and won't let you run other applications while navigating for example ( I run Escort Live ). The only time I will use Apple Car Play is when the on-board Nav maps cannot locate an address. The other reason I don't use Apple Car Play often is that it requires you to be tethered via the USB cable whereas with Android Auto its wireless.
Other than the aforementioned I don't think there was much difference between the two versions.
I updated mine this afternoon to 2.3 using the USB. It was not difficult, just took a little time. Now, I have no idea was the upgrades were going from 2.0 to 2.3 because so far I have not seen any differences since the upgrade.
What method did you use for updating? Over the phone or USB?
No such thing as over the phone update. Lol.
Just messing with you because i`m sure you meant OTA.
Right now the only way to update to 2.3 is via USB.
Ford/SYNC "might" do what they did on the 2.2 update whereas the OTA update was made available 3-4 weeks after it was only available via USB.
Don`t let my mentioning the 2.2 update throw you because that was for 2016 F150`s that had version 1.0 and that update took over a year to be released.
Unless - you use your phone as a wifi hot spot and the truck connects to your phone...
(agree, I would call that OTA, but technically, it is over a phone...)

I have yet to see someone say they successfully did it that way.
I was on the phone yesterday before I did my upgrade from 2.0 to 2.3 with the technical support people at Ford and the lady I was talking with said even if you are in WiFi coverage with your truck (for example, sitting in your garage where your truck connect to your home WiFi), it can take as long as 1 month for it to upgrade. She said if you have the ability to upgrade using a thumb drive that is the quickest way to do the upgrade.
She also told me the 2.3 upgrade was also just released commercially the first part of this week.

i`ve yet to see or here about a successful update via using a phone as a hotspot for an OTA update..

She was correct.
The update via WiFi on your home network or any WiFi hot spot can take as long as a month to fully update.

CarPlay itself is not to blame for needing a cable connection, it does support wireless connection, Ford on the other hand does not support it on their end.
