So I am adding a diesel fired coolant system heater (Webasto brand) to my Excursion. I mounted the heater on the passenger side frame rail and would like to tie into the heater lines that run to the rear heater as I think that would be the cleanest install. One thing that I think will be an issue is if I TEE into the line and run to the Webasto then back to the same line feeding the rear heater I think I will have recirculation issues when running the Webasto. I have also considered TEEING into the lines that come out of each head for the heater circuit so I could use one for a feed to the Webasto then return back to the other head.
Any suggestions on the best route for the coolant plumbing?
I would think for best results you would want to return the coolant a port as far from the feed as you can get. Is there a coolant plug near the oil filter you could return the heated coolant to? That way the heat is circulated through more of the engine.
I have looked at these systems myself but the cost turned me off.
I have thought about eliminating the plug in block heater and using that port on the oil cooler. Do you think pulling out of the oil cooler and returning to the passenger head or the top of the water pump would circulate through the block and radiator? There is a company on EBay selling them for a lot less than I have found them before. I got the one with a programmable thermostat so I can set it to come on a few hours before my wife leaves for work or gets off work. I thought about an auto start but she works in the ER and sometimes doesn't have time to go get close enough for the auto start to work.
HD Rider I sent you a pm. I ended up pulling coolant from the oil cooler, where the block heater went then tied the return into the rear heater line going back to the passenger head. I also ordered a 3/4 brass street tee so I can reinstall my block heater in case I want to use it in addition to the Webasto. I still have to install the wiring harness and run the fuel line then it will be ready for testing.
I know this post is a little old, but I wanted to offer my assistance with Webasto products. I am a factory trained tech and can help diagnose or install or repair or sell most webasto heaters out there.
I have Brand new TSL17/ThermoTop C heater kits available for $700 plus shipping. And good used ones for about $500 for a complete kit.
Also have Airtop 2000ST's and some Espar D2's as well. All brand new of course with warranty. (have used 2000ST's kits for about $550 too)
Born and raised in Fairbanks Alaska, so I know my heaters and the cold!!
When I was in the oil field in the 1980's we had something similar call a Hot Box that was gasoline fired. It had it's own 2 quart fuel tank. Switch it on and in 15 minutes you had warm air from the heater.

Hey just saw your post about the heaters and I'm looking for one for my 2002 Ford f350 7.3. how are they to install? And how much do you think it would be to ship it to Ontario canada?

That user only had one post and hasn't been back online since that day. I got my heater off of EBAY for around $900. There is a dealer in Thunder Bay Ontario that carries them also called IandMelectric not sure if you are close to them but they may be cheaper if you can save on shipping. They have a good website. I also installed a Webasto on my Cummins and used the 4 way check valve fitting you can get from Webasto and that really made the plumbing easy.
