4.0 valve lifter

if i remove the intake can i replace the most forward drivers side valve lifter without removing the head?haynes book says remove head,chilton and ford shop manual don't mention removing the head.

ive done some searching.head must be removed.

I've never tried, but it looks like you should have room to pull the lifters out after you remove the rocker shafts, leaving the heads in place.

i have one that needs to be changed but theres a guy on the ranger forum that says he tried and the head has to be removed.at this point im leaning toward leaving this a five cylinder.no way am i removing the head.it was hard enough removing the valve cover.

I've done this on a few 3400 GM v6 engines. Just unplug the fuel injector.

I don't see why not, you have to pull them before you can pull the head. Just pull the three bolts for the rocker rack.

Maybe the roller lifters are too long? Just a WAG.

theres a twenty minute video on you tube where someone replaced collapsed lifters on their 4.0 ranger.he ended up having to pull the heads.
