Fuel gauge issues

I have a pretty much stock 2002 F350 CC LB SRW with about 116,000 miles on the clock. Last week my low fuel light came on and the needle was well below empty. I have NEVER had the low fuel light come on because I never let the truck get below a 1/4 tank, I also only had about 250 miles on the trip odo and I reset that at every fill up and easily get 400+ miles on a full tank About 3 - 4 minutes later, the light went off and the gauge went back to 1/2 tank. This has occurred about 3 or 4 times now in the past week. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

You can check the wiring at the Fuel Pick-Up Mount. But, most probably, The Sending Unit Contacts have finally worn through or corroded badly reducing contact.

And where would I find those? At the fuel tank?

At the fuel tank?

IN the fuel tank. Need to drop the tank to get to it. At that point it is time for the Hutch/Harpoon mods.

Something is causing your sending unit to read 0-16ohms intermittently. I'd start by wiggling wires from the connector back on the frame and see if the issue comes back. If so, you have a break in the wires allowing them to read directly across each other bypassing the rheostat. The other option is that your rheostat or the wires in the tank have chafed, causing the issue.

I've been having a weird issue with mine also I removed it to do the hutch mod and ever since then when I fill the tank the gauge will read full 150 so miles before the needle starts to drop but it will read a quarter tank when the tank is actually empty. Not sure if I bent the ride somehow when I installed the sending unit again or what but it has been bothering me

Yep, you bent that delicate little wire float arm. I did the same thing on mine, but not quite as bad. Mine shows about 1/8 of a tank when I'm nearly empty. The only solution is to drop the tank and re-bend the float arm. Unfortunately, its a bit of trial and error guess work.

With a truly full tank the 150 miles before you see a change in the gauge is not uncommon. Mine is that way with no tank mods (38 gal) but I don't let it get much below 1/4 anyway. Could be that the float is hanging up on something done during the mods. Either way it looks like the tank is coming out again to fix it.

Did you move the fuel return farther away from the pick up foot? If you did I would guess that is what happened. If you used a compression fitting maybe that loosened up and allowed fuel line to move.
