Just bought a used '03 Expedition and noticed an odd quirk with the fuel gauge.
When I bought it, it had 1/4 tank of fuel in it, so when the low light came on, I went to fill it up and was astonished when it only took 13 gallons before the filler clicked off. that 13 gallons took it all the way to full. I am pretty sure the tank holds 28 gallons, so I am assuming that something odd is going on with the sending unit. I know that the tank is full because I can see fuel in the filler neck if I push open the flap and shine a flashlight in there.
I have seen kind of the opposite before where it reads as if there is fuel remaining when it is bone dry, but not this failure mode before.
Just wanted to make sure I am barking up the right tree before I drop the fuel tank.
I would run it through a few fill ups to see if the gauge recalibrates to your fill cycle. If the PO wasn't in the habit of filling the tank and only threw in 20 buck here or 20 bucks there, then the sending unit and gauge might be working within a learned range. BTW, yes, your tank is a 28 gallon tank.
