Intermittent transmission problem

Hey all, I recently started having transmission issues with my 2000 PSD. Occasionally it will not shift into any gear, OD off or not. When it does shift into D, R, etc it does it immediately, had zero issues, and shifts smoothly when I take it out. When it doesn't shift into a gear, there is nothing. Truck has 116k. Any help would be appreciated!

I would try and explain the problem better.

So how long does it take to shift into gear? Do you just leave it and it pops into gear in a minute? Two mintues? Only when its cold out? Hot out? Last time you had the transmission fluid changed?

Sorry I'll try to give more detail. When it goes into gear it's immediate, no lag or jerking into gear. There is no slop in the shift lever. It's a recent problem and it's been colder here (30's - 40's) but does seem to not engage more in the morning regardless of how long I let it warm up. I was going to let it warm up outside a bit and see if it's will go into gear in a little while. Fluid was changed about 20k ago. The only other thing I've done recently to the truck is the quarter trick on the UVCH but can't see that being related.

Update: Just fired it up again and went right into drive and reverse without issue after trying it this morning where it didn't. Is there some sensor that could be going out?

Any DTCs?

There is a sensor- Transmission Range Sensor- should throw a MIL/CEL if it is on the fritz or going there.

Check the physical linkages-crud and corruption could cause the hard shift as well as the linkage being out of adjustment...

Worse case, drop the pan and inspect...may have thrown a plate.

Thanks TT. My neighbor has a code reader for our trucks so when he has some time I'll ask him to let me use it. I checked the linkage and all is good to go. If I threw a plate it wouldn't function normally at all would it?

A/Ts are a strange bird...just when you think you got them figured out they do something completely different. I had a Dodge Aspen in college...ran fan. Then the torque converter departed. Turned out I had no second gear either. It went from 1st to 3rd. But ran fine...what was left of the second plate was powder.

There is NO sensor that can cause this. If the TRS was bad it would still go into gear, but it might not upshift out of first gear.

Please explain what "threw a plate" means. I've never heard that term.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? It MUST be checked with the transmission warmed up (at least 10 miles of driving, not just idling,) in park, with the engine idling.
