grinds when down shifting to second gear

Hey I have a 78 f 250 and I have to be going very slow almost stoped in order for my truck to go into second gear when down shifting without grinding. Im just curious since you rarely use first gear, shouldnt I be able to shift into second when say, pulling up to a stop sign? second act like it is first gear. Im not talking about down shifting at 15 mph, just when getting close to stopping. thanks for any info.

Your synchro is worn out. 2nd gets it the most, as you put it in 2nd from a dead stop, or sometimes rolling backwards. And 2nd always gets the down shift.
