1981 F250 Towing Capacity

Hey guys what's the best way to determine the GVWR and GCWR for my truck?
It's not on the VIN decal in the driver door sill - that only has the max weight per axle but no towing info.
I don't have the owners manual - but am willing to buy one if the info is in it - I've heard it's not clearly stated in the owners manual.
I have a "light duty" version of the F250 - including Dana 61 semi-floating (not full floating) rear axle.
I do know it's current weight - 6450lbs with full front tank (rear missing).
I'm wanting to determine what 5th wheel weight I can pull and stay within the GCWR.
Thanks!

Geez, that's heavy, my f350 crew cab is 5640 with full tanks, according to the scale at the dump.

You didn't say what engine you have, what tranny you have, and what gear ratios you have in the rearend. That all matters. A 302 with 3.00 to 1 gears will have less towing capacity than one with 3.50 gears in it.

No way that truck weighs 6500lbs unless it's got a utility body on it, a regular pickup would be about 5000-5500lbs depending if it's 2wd or 4wd. And depending what engine, trans, and axle ratio it has the max combined weight is going to be pretty light by modern standards at perhaps 10-12k.

Actually maybe even lower than that. Ignoring the possibility of a 2.47:1 rear end, the GCWR range is from 6450 (a six or smallblock with 3.08 gears) up to 18,500 (460 with 4.10s and an auto trans).

For weight reference...

My '86 F-250 SuperCab 4x4 with Dana 60, 460, ZF5, lifted 4" on 35" tires: 6000 lbs
My '86 F-350 Crew Cab diesel 4x4 with Dana 60, 6.9 IDI, ZF5: 6600 lbs

6450 lbs is not at all out of line for a 4x4 truck with big block or diesel. Keep in mind fuel alone can be 350-400 lbs with a 19 gallon front and 38 gallon rear, depending on gas or diesel, and that's not including if he has a tank in the bed or anything else mounted for that matter.

Makes sense. Just surprised, mines a 351w but it's a crew cab and 4wd.

Good point - this is a:
1981 F250 standard (Custom) cab with 133" wheelbase 4x4
Interestingly my door sticker says it's a F-260 so that's also on my title & registration...
Reading utility / service bed with lots of tools
Original motor was a 351cid (unsure if W or M)
Current motor that a PO put in is 460cid (love the low rpm torque but this heavy pig is making my front leaf's sag, but that's for another post...)
No A/C
NP435 tranny
BW1345 transfer case
Dana 44 I believe up front
Dana 61 semi-float rear
3.00 gears - wish it had 4.11's...probably will someday...
Tow hitch
2 spares in bed
235/85R16 tires on ford 16"x6" steel wheels (heavy wheel/tire combo)

I mistyped the weight - it's actually 6240lbs with 3140lbs on the front axle and 3100lbs on the rear

The weights are from the recycle yard's scales.

Yep heavy but that's what it is,,,

Not sure about the accuracy, but the last post in this old thread may be of interest:

I don't believe it. That thread was about 70's pickups, not 1980 and later pickups.

What is the 4th digit in your vin?
