I changed both fuel filters on my truck at 29k miles, which was a couple months ago. It was the second time I’ve changed them as I do that service every 15k miles.
Anyway, pulling the camper home from a weekend trip today I got a “Fuel Filter Change Required” message. The truck has about 32.5k miles on it now or only about 3k since I changed the fuel filters.
I don’t recall if I reset the minder in the message center when I changed the filters. My question; Does anyone know if the fuel filter message is based on anything other than miles? And this early message is as simple as I forgot to reset the minder. Or, is the message based on other parameters and I should change the fuel filters again after only 3,000 miles.
And the reset is indeed based on mileage. There are a few things that go into factoring mileage like the way the truck is being driven and load, but it the end it's just a mileage counter. The truck cannot tell if you have actually changed the filter.
As senix noted, you might check the bottom filter as a just in case, but I too think you just need to do the reset.
See page 92 of your owner's manual. It shows resetting the fuel filter if it has been changed.
Hmm, I realize the op's truck is a '15, but I'm not seeing anything to reset regarding fuel filter in my '16 manual or diesel supplement.
In the maintenance section the oil change references a reset (#2 Reset the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor after engine oil and filter changes), but the fuel filter only references:
"Every 22500 miles (36000 km) Replace the engine-mounted and frame-mounted fuel filters.#3."
"#3 Every 22500 miles (36000 kilometers) or as indicated by the information display."
I'm at 22-23K miles and have changed fuel filters twice. I've done no (fuel filter) reset and seen no messages. My truck is an XL and does have the abbreviated view screen. Am I missing something here?
I've done a little digging and found that the *type 1* display of my XL doesn't have a reset function for the fuel filter or coolant change. Is this not monitored on the low brow trucks or am I gonna get forced to the dealer for a reset?
I can’t answer your question on need for dealer intervention. I can tell you that on my truck the coolant and fuel filter reset is under the “maintenance” menu on the information display.
XL and XLT trucks with the small genreic display above the steering column don't remind you of any thing, except the oil change interval.
Just reset oil when you change it. If you know you changed the fuel filters and it is reminding you. then just reset it. The prompt is not generated by fuel filter condition just by miles.
If you get a low fuel pressure message that's a different story.
My '15 is in Lariat trim and I have never received the "fuel filter change" message, I currently have 71,xxx mi. I do change it at the specified 22,500 mi. interval and reset the reminder every time.
Just a guess but its more than a mileage counter as some have suggested, it must use similar data as the IOLM. I have thought of waiting on the message to change, but since I have never seen a message I thought maybe there wasn't one.
