DPF Warning

I have an 08' F350 with 159K miles on a 6.4L .
I've had the truck since it had 44K, no issues except one bad EGT sensor. Maint is up to date and it normally runs fine.
Lately I've had two instances where I get the "Pull over safely now" message and when I stop, the truck shuts down. If I let it cool off, the check engine light stays on but the engine will start. I can go about 10 miles then it does it again. I suspect the DPF is getting plugged, but I don't have symptoms I would expect. It accelerates like normal, I'm not getting frequent regens, and my fuel economy hasn't changed, (~15mpg).
What can I look at to decide if my DPF really needs R&R'd, or if I have a bad sensor? Local wrencher wants to hang parts, plug and pray is too expensive. Dealer is probably going to suggest I replace the DPF.
I'm sure this topic has been thoroughly thrashed. Some advice or a link to an existing thread would be appreciated.

I would scan it to find out whats really wrong before putting any money in it. I am not familiar with the 6.4, but I am on very good terms with the 6.0.

There is a specific section for 6.4 and if they are as helpful as the 6.0 guys they will get you fixed up in no time. Mods might even tow your post there.

Worse case senecio if your exhaust back pressure sensor was caked up with soot and not detecting back pressure you would regen by default every 600 miles which probally is not enough.

i would pull the ebp sensor and use a hanger to poke thru any soot that could be caked up there.

then run it to see if it detected dpf back pressure and throws it into regen. If it does, go buy a couple of bottles of Lucas dpf cleaner , throw it in the tank, and take a long drive.
