My Truck, 04 F350 4x4 CC 6.0 auto 5300mi, has begun to intermittentally surge on accelerating from a stop. As I press the acellerator evenly the rpms will
"buck" a bit and "surge" and then settle down. This happens rarely.
Today as I was pulling into a parking space the motor quit. Just shut down.
I waited a bit and she fired right up and I drove 140 trouble free miles home.
What is up? is this just a hiccup? or the early symptoms of trouble w/ injectors
etc...

JWS, sounds like one of the sensors is acting up. A couple of things that will cause the symptoms you describe are a bad egr valve or a defective EBP (exhaust pressure) sensor. Do a search here on those to topics and read up on them. Then take it into your dealer and let them determine which one is bad and replace it.
Got this off Dieselman's site:
2003-05 Various Running Problems, Check Engine Light; New EBP Sensor:
Trucks built before 1-17-05 that exhibit buck/jerk, hesitation, lack of power, stalling, stumble, black smoke, surging, rolling idle, changes in engine sound at idle or when driving at a steady speed, or with the trouble codes P2263 or P0299, may have an exhaust backpressure sensor signal that is incorrect or erratic. A revised EBP sensor is available if this is found to be the case. Part number 4C3Z-9J460-A. Broadcast Message 3815.
Normal EBP signal reading should reflect atmospheric pressure with the key on/ engine off. Typically, this is 14.7 PSI/0.88-0.9 volts at sea level, decreasing one PSI/0.10 volt for every 2000 feet of elevation. It should be within 0.5 PSI of BARO and MAP sensor pressure signals.
Hope this helps.

A friend has an 04 with similar symptoms, bucking and surging and billowing smoke below 1800rpm. Dealership's solution, keep rpm's above 1800....go figure. With the amount of diesels on the coast here I thought that they would have figured this out by now. This is a work truck and when he has a tidy tank of fuel (600 litres) 150 gallons it is far worse.
I am having the same problems. You mention the back pressure sensor. I put a flow pro muffler and 4" tailpipe with a 5" tip. It is a "muffler back" as I am saving to do a cat back. Would this affect the back pressure, and am I in any warantee trouble. I have a cat, and did not touch it. Levi
Yes it could effect the back pressure, but would have the sensor checked to see if it is bad. As for warranty that is up to your dealer and how he approaches modifications. Some dealers don't care and others run right to FMC.
crummy trk,
I think i would find a new dealer to service my truck if i was your friend, one that has a qualified diesel tech.
I will tell you exactly what the problem is. It is the wiring harness. I bought my 2004 f-350 back in August. First month no problems, but last week of September started surging. Took truck into dealer 6 times over the next 6 months changing everything from back pressure sensor to the egr valve. Did not fix the problem. Finnally the dealer called the head ford guys and they agreed to change out the wiring on top of the engine and I have had no problems since March 1. Just a hint, everytime I would take my truck into the dealer it would never throw code, so it took longer to fix the problem. My money says WIRING HARNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!
JWS,
It could be bad fuel, the water in fuel light does not always come on when there is water in the fuel and nothing will come on if the fuel has a poor octane level nor will you necessarily get any codes, I would check that before you try to get your truck re-wired. I agree that any of the above problems could cause the symptoms you have.
