I have an 87 Ranger XLT with the 2.9 V6, auto trans. Purchased the truck new. No modifications to the truck at all. A few years ago it started to stall when I put it in gear after a cold start, I would restart and it would run fine. Also if I started it and had to leave it for a few minutes the engine would start to rev up and down until it would stall. I had it tuned up and the injectors cleaned. All was fine fore almost 2 years and now it has started the same thing again. Does anybody know what is going on? I have a friend who has a 87 Ranger also and his does the same thing. Any information on the cause would be welcomed.
My parents had a similar problem with their Jeep and their mechanic never could quite seem to find what was wrong with it. I would bet anything you have a sensor problem, more specifically relating to an IAC and or a coolant temp sensor.
If you have a multimeter and a Haynes manual you can check the ohm readings coming from the coolant temp sensor when engine is cold AND warm to make sure they are within specs. If not, replace it.
You can try cleaning the IAC with some electric parts cleaner, but not sure if youll have much luck there since they seem to be a mostly sealed unit when you take it out.
To Ken00:
I have the 2.9 EFI V6. I also have the following Pubs, 1987 Ranger/Bronco II Electrical and Vacuum Trouble Shooting Manual, Ford Do it yourself Service Manual, Ranger/Bronco and Chilton’s Ford Ranger/Bronco II Explorer 1983-1991. I have looked for the IAC in all of them and have not found it.
If you could tell me where it is on the engine and what it looks like I would appreiacte it.
Well, theyre 2 kens here so not sure which one you meant. I didnt actually stop to think if that engine HAS an IAC. If neither manual you own makes any mention of that sensor, chances are you dont have one. That kind has been put in vehicles for quite some time though, (I can recall an '87 Jimmy s-10 with a 2.8 litre I used to own that had one) so on the other hand, it might have one.
My dad owns a Bronco II 1987 with that engine in it. I should be over his place tomorrow and if I remember, I'll pop the hood and take a look see. Hope I can get it open tho, it's been sitting for a number of years. Need a parts car by chance ??
To Seagull 369 and Ken00, thanks for the info, so far all is the same and rest assured if I find the cause it will be public knowledge very quickly. Once again Many Thanks Meforget
The IAC is located on the upper intake manifold, about half way back on the passengers side, looks like a silver film canister with a tail and two wires.
