No Overdrive

'99f350 lots of miles. Went to get on interstate pulling 7000lb trailer. Just as it started to shift into overdrive, there was a slight noise and then no overdrive. Hit button OD off, was able to continue 25mi to destination in drive, dropped trailer, drive 800mi to home in drive. Don't have any codes, OD light does not flash. Trans temp stayed cool. Now what?

Pull apart the steering column and see if the OD wire has rubbed thru and shorted on something. Just a guess and wouldn't it be nice if it's that simple.

How is your shift column altogether? Mine has a problem I've been chasing and dealing with where if it's not place properly at the 'D' it will drop out of OD on me.
