I have a 1977 F-150 2wd, 400 and aC6. I am installing a deeper oil pan for better cooling as the 400 is FAR from stock as is the trans. ( High stall and shift kit) The question I have is... Should I use a longer pickup tube (will the 4x4 pickup fit my 2wd deep pan?) to grab the cooler oil from the bottom of the pan or not worry about it. Just thought with the deeper pan why not?
Deeper trans pans don't aid in cooling. The reason why they can't is because the outer layer of ATF which surrounds the oil doesn't allow heat transfer through built in cooling fins of the pan.To dissipate heat, use a aux cooler downstream of the oem factory cooler.
Ideal trans temps are 175F.
The only thing a deeper trans pan will get you,is increased fluid capacity. This can help prolong fluid changes. The downside is,when its time to change the fluid, you'll have to pay a larger lump sum for the added oil.

To add to that, the other reason pans don't help cooling is that the pan is in a hot part of the vehicle. The air around the pan is not cool, even going down the road. The radiator dumps it's hot air under the truck, and in most vehicles the very hot exhaust passes right by the pan. You can't cool the trans with hot air.
The best way to cool the trans is to use a cooler inside the radiator AND an air to oil cooler out in front of all other coolers.
