So I've got a replace one of my cab corners, inside and out. Two main questions at this point:
1) Can I weld in the new pieces with the fuel tank installed and full of fuel or will I blow up my garage?
2) After I get this thing welded and smoothed out, how can I seal it up for a while? I don't have real painting capability, so I just want to rattle can it up for now. The whole truck needs lots of body work, so how can I best seal up for the next year until everything else it complete? What are some good products / processes?
1) I would rather the tank be full as liquid doesn't burn. Personally I wouldn't worry about it, just be careful, but I have started more than few fires in the shop in my time.
Whatever you do, have a couple fire extinguishers within reach.
When I had the shoulder harness plates welded into my 51 F4 cab, I thoroughly soaked some old towels and wrapped the tank and filler pipe. The truck is still in one piece... no explosions, no fires.
You need to remove the tank. For one reason. You will have to get to the back side of the weld to dolly out the lumps and bumps after you weld it in and you need to get some sort of primer on the inside after its welded.
