Well, I found out whats wrong with my trans. It may have overheated just a bit. Actually it looks like it has grenaded inside. The pan is full of aluminum chips. The pan magnet is about twice its normal size with metal filings. The fluid is a pretty honey color, make that dark brown.
I struggled getting it into my shop. It would slam into gear then neutral, back and forth. All I can hope for is the case is ok.
Just wantd to share my frustration. I'll keep the forum updated.
Now for an update. I’ve got the trans rebuilt and back in the truck. Of course not without some problems. I had to make a couple tools to complete the job. I also had to remove it after I installed the first time after I found a bearing that I missed installing.
So now I’m ready for its maiden run on a fresh trans.

glad you got it running. Any detail, what came apart first, how many miles, what was previous maintenance?
So now I’ve got it in the truck, it runs great in 1,2,3 but when time to go into 4th (or overdrive) it goes into neutral. Anybody have any ideas? I was so ready to take a trip.
This truck only has 140,000 miles on it. The tranny had been repaired once before. I think the cause of this failure is the original torque converter was put back in. The tc disintegrated and spread metal flake throughout the trans.
My guess is that there is a major leak in the overdrive clutch. The overdrive clutch is only used in fourth gear, so everything would work fine until it tries to shift to fourth gear.
Now for the embarassing truth! I installed the OD sprag backwards. It turned the wrong direction. I feel like a moron! I had the day from hell when I pulled the trans this last time. First of all I backed into my 1962 pickup and dented the rear quarter panel which also broke out the tail lght on the ford. Next when I pulled the ford into the shop I noticed a trail of tranny fluid. I found out the transfer case drain plug had split the case! I have ordered a replacement. I pulled the trans and found the OD sprag backwards. So now I tried to reassemble the trans with the sprag installed correctly only to have the bearing between the pump stator and the OD sun gear fall out of place. When I tightened the pump bolts I heard a crack. So I take it apart and find I shattered the bearing!
It makes me feel like hanging up my tools!
I have ordered friction discs, stator sun gear bearing and a rear end shell.
After all that at least I didn’t draw any blood so I guess it wasn’t that bad!
By the way, does anyone know if a rear case half from an auto shift will fit on a manual shift 1356?
