ok the trans went out on my truck at the end of august so im just going to get off my butt and pull it out.but before i do i kinda want some input on if its the trans or possibly torque converter or something else.the symptoms are.....
1500 miles ago i changed trans fluid and filter now it is no longer red its got a brown tinge, the truck did get hot once right before the motor died on me and i had to replace injectors.when in gear it vibrates more than normal when i hit the accelerator a little it shakes(vibrates) and searches for a gear until it finally gets to a certain rpm and catches,it does however move forward as it searches.
when i tried to climb a hill in 4x4 it was just gutless.i was kinda thinking it might just be a TC but was worried with the discolored fluid it may have done internal damage as well.would it be worth just putting a new TC in and then trying it or should i just have it rebuilt/find a different one?
Mine was slipping before and it was bad clutches....Fluid was clean and didn't smell, but there was a bunch of metal in the pan. $1700 to rebuild it...
If your going to get it rebuilt get it UPGRADED....... 94 and below E4OD had internal problems. I got a Ford rebuilt/upgraded in about 96/97 and have never looked back.
Rupe, that is most likely a burned clutch pack. A blown torque converter will not catch after it blows no matter how much you rev it up. Once its gone - its gone!
A slipping clutch will manifest itself more gradually though. If you are lucky, all you have to replace are the friction elements which come with the rebuild kit anyway. Hopefully it didn't get hot enough to melt anything else in there. When I tore down the core I built, it had a melted direct clutch piston which I had to special order from ford. $40 if I remember right.
But do go through everything and I do mean EVERYTHING with a fine tooth comb. Set yourself up with a pharmacy clean work bench and tear down the valve body to every last spring and clip so you can clean it out completely. All it takes is one little shard of sand or chipped metal to ruin your day even if everything else in the transmission is perfect.
ok not sure i wanna tackle the rebuild now.lol the e4od is kind of a difficult trans to hunt down even from the psd i was looking for a psd to swap my converter and solenoid pack into but they dont exist close to me i dont think.lol so now im onto looking at the zf5 swap the truck is parked and dont really need to go anywhere soon so what would i need to swap a zf5 in?do i need a donor from an idi as well or can i just get it all from a psd?
youll need the tranny, clutch, pedal assy, master cyl and slave cyl, a standard tranny column if the auto shifter is gonna bother you, a new hole in your floor, and probly other stuff
didn't your E40D last a long time Rupe?
figure another one is a direct bolt in deal, and it could outlast the truck.
certainly much cheaper and less time consuming to just drop another used E40D in.
no trans, nor clutch last forever.the zf5's and their clutches fail too.
a good used E40D from a salvage yard,costs less than a new clutch for a zf5.
edit.yeah,i thought i remembered it being in the poll:
