Hello, I already posted this question in the (73-79) section but thought I would go ahead and ask here as well. My 3 speed column shifter is wearing out in my 1976 F-100 that has a 302 engine so I'm going to put a Hurst 3 speed floor shifter in. But I was wondering if there was a economical, plug and play, 4 speed conversion? Or would that require major fabrication?
As oem, those trucks were equipped with a 4 speed. Very low first, 2-3-4 similar to your 3 speed.
Later in the '70s into the '80s, a 4 speed OD was used. 1-2-3 similar to your 3 speed, 4th OD. Those were based on the performance 4 speed from the '60s. Some were iron cased, side shifted. The aluminum ones are weak for truck use.
Once you get into the 5 speeds, all used a hydraulic clutch.
What is your price and re-work tolerance? Hydraulic clutch, cross member and driveshaft fiddling are not exactly major fabrication, but it's not 100% bolt in either.

Thank you, that is the type of knowledge I'm looking for. I'm interested in knowing the easiest but yet still worth while 4 speed conversion or does it make better sense to just stay with my original thought of putting a hurst 3 speed on the floor if I don't go to a 5 speed conversion as was recommended in the 73-79 forum?
I just wanted to close this thread out with my finished results. The column shifter would often get jammed up when I would go from 1st to 2nd. The new Hurst shifter drops into second gear every time as long as I follow the true H pattern. If I try to cut the corner it will still jam, It is not perfect but a lot better. At least I don't have to get out of my truck in traffic, pop the hood and unjam the jam anymore.
