Dana 44-3 Rear Axle /3.00-1/ 2,900 lbs Axle Capacity
So this is the information that was taken from the data plate, Dana 44-3 Rear Axle /3.00-1 /2,900 lbs Axle Capacity. I have a 302 engine with a 3.03 3-speed transmission and I just want to use this truck to beat around the back roads. The 3.00-1 is a really high gear right? I have a rear end seal leak and I figure when I open it up I may as well change the gearing and get some type of possi. Can someone please tell me how high a 3.00-1 is and what is the best gearing for back road shenanigans? Thanks,

That's a 9 inch. 3.00 is pretty tall, I had that ratio in a '65 Mustang with a 289, 303 trans and 25 to 26" tires. In the Mustang it was ok, with your weight and tire it might be a little doggy on the low end.
If you want a limited slip, it will cost you some money. Frankly, with your motor, gearing a weight, just upgrade your rear tires if you are going to be on dirt and you'll have fewer traction issues. You really shouldn't be having too many traction issues on pavement unless you are pitching it sideways in every corner. If you like doing that, the limited slip or locker will help you find the ditch sooner.
