I'm pretty new at this, I'm not familiar with diesels at all, but hoping to lean on y'all some. Here goes.
I bought a four door 87 350, non dually for cheap. He said the truck has a 6.9, but I'm not sure, like I said I got it cheap. How do I tell? All I know is it does not have a turbo.
I don't have any friends close by that are diesel-inclined, so do any of you guys know of any step
by step resources on how to do a motor rebuild? What to look for, what to do and why, etc? WITH pictures? I would like to learn how to do it on my own. I read posts here often, and am very appreciative of how helpful y'all are.
Dont know if this helps, here's a horrible pic of the motor, maybe it can be identified.
I will I'll check out the stickies, thank you. As far as why to consider a rebuild, I've read that grey-ish smoke out of the exhaust might be an indicator of fried piston rings. My brother followed me on the interstate while I was driving the truck, at first black smoke was pretty noticeable when starting from a stop, and then as we progressed along the interstate for about an hour to two hours, the color went to grey he said. As far as volume of the smoke, he didnt say. He did say it became less and less. At idle there is no smoke coming from the exhaust.

As for the basics, check out the stickies in this forum. that should get you up to speed.
WHy do you think you need to "rebuild" the engine? What is wrong with it?

Is he sure it was grey and not just white? White is fine (could mean a bunch of stuff, but probably not engine rebuild necessary). If it was blue, then you could be having problems.
White and black smoke could just be a timing issue. Or fuel screw or IP related. How old are the injectors? etc
smell the exhaust .if it is burning oil or antifreeze, you will know it. oil smells like oil, antifreeze smells sweet. if the exhaust burns your eyes, it is most likely unburnt fuel due to weak or bad injectors.
