2000 Ford 7.3 maintenance

hey guys I have a 2000 7.3 with 99000 miles on it. Was wondering what you guys do for maintenance and how often. I bought it 12 years ago with 72000 miles on it so I do t use it much. Mostly for towing. Is there anymore to do to the engine other then oil change and fuel filter?

Have you just done engine oil and fuel filters? If that’s it you might want to start with:
-transmission fluid flush and filter
-brake fluid flush

The list is fairly endless. Just how much of your money do you want us to help you spend?

oil i did begining od this year. Duke filter has been about 2 1/2 years. Transmission I can look into had it rebuilt about 15000 miles ago. Brakes I have never flushed.

What fuel filters do you guys recommend. I know some are cheaper then others.

First check and see if you still have the 2 piece fuel filter top and filter, some aftermarket filters have a top built onto the filter. If you still have the seperate top go with Motorcraft. Usually within dollar or two of aftermarket filters and you know their quality isn't hit and miss.

As far as engine maintenance look into replacing ALL your orings with viton orings, the original orings don't hold up to the ultra low sulfur diesel that was phased in after our 7.3's, and check your coolant sca level

along with flushing your brakes, also look into flushing your power steering fluid, should be bright red, pop the house on the master cylinder, and add atf to the ps reservoir while pumping the brakes and turning the wheels

Could do thermostat and housing, water pump, upper rad hose that wraps around the serpentine belt, and degas tank while you're at it. Just did this over this past weekend. Got a reman pump though and it leaked like a seive and sounded awful with a grinding noise. Lucky me, got to do it twice

Definitely Motorcraft. If yours has the aftermarket filter attached to the cap, I'd buy a new cap and switch back. They can be picky about using Motorcraft filters.

As stated by others, go Motorcraft. The Motorcraft filter will be separate from the cap, unlike aftermarket filters. You can pick up a new cap if needed.

Motorcraft oil filters are a good choice too when doing that area of maintenance. For around $10, they can't be beat.

Don’t forget gear oil for the differential(s). If it’s 4x4, I would lift the front end every now and then and check for play in the wheels to make sure the bearings and ball joints are still tight. My first set of hub bearings gave up at 36k with 35” tires. The current bearings have about 150k on them, but I don’t off-road like I used to.

Here's a list of everything I've done to my 2000 Excursion:

mods on truck:
Round 1 (November 2014 - February 2015)
- pre-pump mods/baldwin filter
- V/Mod B suspension
- Bilstein shocks
- Hellwig Sway bar
- MBRP exhaust
- S&B CAI
- EGT, Trans, boost gauges
- PHP/Gearhead tunes
- water pump/ELC upgrade
- oil cooler seals
- 6.0 trans cooler and magnafine inline filter

Round 2 (January 2017 - August 2017
- 160/80 injectors
- 38R turbo
- EBPV delete
- injector cups
- glow plugs
- up-pipes
- boots & clamps
- FRx
- HPOP hoses
- JW trans
- Stainless brake lines
- Cryo rotors/Hawk pads
- timken bearings/seals
- fuel bowl rebuild
- HPOP rebuild
- coolant filter
- fuel pressure gauge
- grease slip joint
- rear axle u-joints
- front axle u-joint and stub shaft

That's a pretty exhaustive list of maintenance and it also includes a lot of things that aren't maintenance, like injectors and a turbo. Other things that aren't maintenance but are good to have and correct factory defects, like the pre-pump mods or the FRx.

Some of these are pretty much mandatory, and a few others only really apply to Excursions, like the spring swap and Hellwig sway bar.

Change your oil. you have. Change your fuel filter. Drive it like you stole it.

Keep the batteries up to par and you have a keeper.

(hint, motorcraft red top fuel treatment) If your not running a tank every two weeks, don't top off but condition your fuel.)

These fellas have most of it covered, but I have to ask. What warranted a transmission rebuild at 84k miles?

Probably a bunch of this group would drive all the way to CA for a truck like that if you wish to sell it.

Unleashed, you knocked out a bunch of stuff in a short period of time. I am sure you Ex is much happier now though. Thanks for sharing your list of parts with everyone.
