You should be able to walk into any Napa or other local parts store and get a replacement. Nothing exactly special about a starter for an FE engine. Make sure you let them know if it is manual or automatic and what engine ya got and they should be able to fix you up.
1. Starters can be bad - even freshly rebuilt - out of the box. It's nice to be able to take something back and get an exchange when dealing with something like a starter.
2. Starters are heavy. Shipping to you might not cost much as vendors can get good prices on shipping, but if you have to return it for any reason it can cost a good bit.
3. There is often a core fee so you have to get them your original if you want to recoup that.
Here's why I say they may ask you about transmission type
If you're not in a hurry consider rebuilding it, not a lot of $$ involved and the results are probably better. Some of these "rebuilds" just get a coat of fresh coat of paint is about the extent of it. "Spray and pray."
Recently replaced starter on 65 w/ the 390, in my case, thru NAPA. If already have not done so, suggest remove and compare to replacement also provides one stop shopping in event need to add parts to list, I had to remove passenger side header and exhaust flange requiring replacement bolts and gasket as well as the exchange core.
Hoping to save some money and buy one online for cheaper...where do people go?
I'm a big fan of rockauto. On any reasonable sized order, the cost even with shipping always works out cheaper than buying from the local parts store. With a starter though, you have to consider return shipping on the core as well. Depends on what you can find locally as to whehter it's cost effective or not. I bought a steering gear from rockauto and never even returned the core (got charged $75). It was still cheaper than what the locals were selling.

If doing it like this I would also suggest buying a rebuild kit for your current one. Then you can learn to rebuild your own, and have a spare on hand just in case. Now that would be cost effective.

I agree. Except in my case, the core was cracked (couldn't be rebuilt) and wasn't an acceptable return. Still came out ahead though.

This is excellent advice. For anything electrical. Case in point. I needed a hand full of small parts. Since I was going to pay shipping no matter what I also ordered two sealed beams for my headlights from NPD. Put the right side in. Fit good no problem, put the left side in and WTF the china men had glued the lens on 15 degrees out from where it should have been. I was going to be coon hunting on the drivers side no matter how I adjusted it. NPD is sending me another one no questions asked, but it will Monday before I get a replacement. If I had gotten them from NAPA I would have been done 4 days ago.
