hey guys, im in the market for a new starter. actually all four of our vehicles have something wrong with them (aint it how it goes) so my budget is tight. I know getting a GOOD starter is very important, wondering if anyone has any magic sources but also I have credit cards if I just have to buck up. ....still... would like opinions on brands. thanks.
What year truck? On my 97 I just went to NAPA and they had the 3 bolt gear reduction starter for around $150, best guess .. it's been a couple years. Most will say to use the SD 2 bolt starter, turns over faster.
Whatever route you go with make sure the batteries are in good shape as bad batteries will take out a starter and a bad starter will take out the batteries. It's pretty amazing, and a bit scary how fast these rigs will turn over with good batteries and a new starter.
sorry its a 95.... just got new batteries and cables last year
I'm planning a new tyc brand from rock auto for a SD. It will bolt directly on and supposedly is only 60ish buxs. Many have had good luck with it an I am gonna try it.

Seconding this recommendation based on quite a bit of reading here. At this price point, it may be worth ordering before your starter is actually done for and having it on hand when the time comes. Speaking from experience after having one quit in a very rural area. Had to buy one at more than double this price from an auto parts store just to get back up and running same day.
X2 on the TYC starter from Rockauto. I got one for my Excursion and Crew Cab. just make sure you get the starter for a SD, otherwise you'll pay about $150. Check for Rockauto coupons before you check out too, you should be bale to save 5% or so.
