Reason: DOH....
Well, I will tell you that I had a bad experience with a DB starter. However, with that said, there are lots of folks who have been VERY happy with theirs. So take my word as you want.
At any rate, I bought a brand new DB starter a few months ago. First, it came with a "made in China" sticker on it. Next, I had difficulty bolting it up, as I had to notch out a section of the crossmember to get it to fit (some people have not had to do this, a few like me did have to do it). Next, the solenoid location made it very difficult to route the starter cable and bolt it up. Lastly, once it was all done, the starter was DOA.
That was my experience. Yours may vary. Again, take it as you want. I sent it back, got a full refund, and bought a Mitsubishi starter.
So far I have seen good experiences with DP. I know all of there stuff is bought new and built in their shop here in east TN. Atleast as far as their alternators go.
I'm not sure when the MIC issue got started with teh starters, but I'm one that has had absolutely zero problems with the DB starter and also did not have to do any grinding.
That said, with the latest "rash" of several members having had problems, I'm debating whether to do another DB unit as opposed to having my OEM unit rebuilt by a local shop for my 7.3L Excursion... the way things are going, I'll probably hav ethe original one rebuilt due to cash flow issues and if I have the luxury of extra dollars later... perhaps try the DB route again at a future date.
Hey pocket you got me thinkin i will just go with stock. Stock one lasted me 88k miles so why not ! We have a local shop here that has a good rep and they rebuilt my alternator and even fixed for free 3 months out of warranty!
Well, several people I know personally have DB starters and swear by them. So the ones that work, I'm not knocking them. It's just that I had really bad luck with the one I got. Since they aren't local to me, I can't swap it out the same day if it does die on me.... which is kind of a PITA.
Ok just got done installing my rebuilt starter and WOW. I guess mine was on its way out when I bought the truck 3yrs ago cuz it sounds completely different! So much so that when I was at a buddy's house in Phoenix I told him his truck sounded weird and not like mine when you start it . Turns out mine was the one that sounded weird lol. Anyway it starts right up like nobodys business now, Hope fully this one gets 88k mi like the original one!
I ended up going with the mitsu starter as well. My original one was the 2 bolt started but since one of the ears had broken off, I decided to go with the 3 bolt mitsu starter and like it a lot more. It spins nice and snappy now.
Is the Mitsubishi starter a gear reduction type, for faster cranking? Also has anyone heard reviews on the TYC starter? I’m looking for a reasonably priced gear reduction starter for a 7.3.
It states in the listing from j&s diesel that it is a high-torque gear reduction starter but it is the same size as the original starter. It is not a beast like the Denso. I can tell you this, since I put the Mitsubishi starter on my truck it cranks unbelievably fast. For the price I couldn't be happier
