I have searched through all the post on using the mustang tank in my 1949 F1. I didn't find anything showing what fuel sending unit to use for aftermarket gauges. I found one post where he added one to the top of the tank and took out the stock unit and left just the feed tube for supply of fuel but he didn't say what he used. I may have missed a post but don't know. Thanks

 

You need an aftermarket gauge that is compatible with the stock Mustang sending unit.

there are two ways you can make this working. Either using a sending unit and gauge compatible to the mustang tank (that means you can order that parts in a Mustang shop such as Summit or Rockauto....). But theese parts need 12V! Or you keep your stock gauge, buy a stock sending unit and mount this on the top of the mustang tank. This way you'll need to calibrate the stock sending unit by bending the arm of the sending unit or by interposing a resistor. Not an easy way and not as accurate as the first way, but possible.

We put a new 22 gallon '70 Mustang tank in our truck with modern
Autometer gauges. We had to use the Mustang tank's sending unit
to get the unique fuel pick up that fits that tank. We then bought a
second universal sending unit that was compatible with our gauges ...
just soldered the universal unit's sending unit onto the '70.

I hope that helps. You basically buy (2) sending units & & solder the universal
one onto the '70 ....it's pretty straight forward and luckily the universal ones are pretty cheap.

can be used with all the different types of gauges. I'll see if I can

Hi Tracy,


I used the mustang tank and sending unit in my 52. My modern gauge set is from New Vintage. They fit the standard opening in the dash as I didn't want to cut that up at all.


If you contact them directly and tell them what ohm range sending unit you have they will build you a set of gauges with the proper fuel gauge.


Very nice people to deal with and they back their products.

Thanks for all the help. I have a friend that sells mustang parts and giving him a call about a tank today. Auto meter's web site claims to have a gauge that will work with the 73-10 ohm sending unit. If not I will do the combining of the two sending units and see how that goes.

 

I used an autometer gauge with the ford ohm sweep and it works fine. Speedway motors also sells a module that somehow converts the sending unit signal to whatever ohm range your gauge is. Not sire how well that works though.
