84' F250 XL, 460 auto. When the truck has gotten up to temperature, it won't restart-it's as if the starter is barely working, very slow. Battery is fine. Starter is only 3 months old. Cold it starts up perfectly, very easy. Any ideas?
The 460 engine generates quite a bit of heat. Has the exhaust been altered? If using headers or if the exhaust pipe is very close to the starter motor, it can have these symptoms.
Have you checked the ignition timing? If too advanced, the engine will struggle to start, especially when hot.
Check all electrical connections between the battery and the starter. Corrosion causes resistance.
When the engine is cold, compression is lower so the engine is easier to spin. When hot, compression increases and the starter system has to work harder. Heat also affects the starter motor, too, but I think the increase in compression is the biggest culprit.
"starter is only 3 months old"
im gambling your starter went bad.
especially since yourtone makes me think you have not had this problem b4.
other possibility: the 3 months the starter has been in and you cable from fender relay to starter is not conducting amp adequately.
I will check out the timing-I didn't consider that would make the starting hard. I will also check the cables.
If today, you encounter the slow start condition, disconnect the ignition coil wire at the distributor and then try to start the engine. If it spins quickly, that will indicate the timing is working against you.
