My 79 150 4x4 (460) first time cranking fires up and runs like a dream, but when I shut it off even after a short run to the store it has a hard time turning over again. It'll eventually fire back up again, but I've got to floor it when I hear start to turn over.
One person told the thought the cable running from the starter might be getting too hot being next to the manifold and that I need to re-routeI'm thinking more along the lines a new starter or cables. Battery seems to check out ok (Interstate), but it does have some wiring mess where the PO tired to hook up some driving lights that only work half the time
It very well could be the heat on the starter. You might want to look at getting a heat shield. I actually have the same type of thing going on with mine, but mine I think is just a bad starter and not heat cause. My truck will crack up just fine at first, but after driving a little bit, the next time I start the truck it cranks much slower. I have a higher compression motor so I think mine is just wearing out the starter, but I think our symptoms are the same-bad starter.

Thanks for the info. Is the heat shield an aftermarket product or did you fab it yourself? Any pics?
The guy that told me this leaned more towards the wire coming from the starter getting heated, but I think I'll go ahead and replace the starter and re-route new wires to the battery.
You can get some heat wrap from summit or jegs fairly cheap or even a shield that will work. I haven't gotten anything yet, since I'm trying to decide if I need to get a high torque starter for my motor. But, when I do, I'll get something like what summit sells. Here is a link for what they have. Search Results for starter heat wrap - SummitRacing.com
