When I used peanut butter it was about 50/50 if the mouse would just lick it clean or actually set the trap. What I found that worked quite well was chewing up some laughy taffy and sticking it on the trap. The mice tug at it and set the trap.
Wife has a ‘17 Edge and before she drove to LA last weekend, I checked the fluids. As I was closing the hood I saw a piece of cat crap on the fuse box... then I noticed a bunch of paw prints. There is no way the thing could have crawled up there... There’s literally no room...
Cats are fairly amazing at playing hide and seek. Years ago I was helping a friend move out of an apartment. The place was completely empty and we could not find the cat anywhere. Looked in every closet and cabinet, no windows cracked or holes found anywhere that a cat could crawl through.....left and came back 4 hours later and the cat was sitting in the middle of the living room carpet........still amazes me to this day how that cat hid from us.
The RV guys use a product called Fresh Cab inside to keep the rodents away. I'm using it in my trailer but I also set out two "traps" of d-CON poison under the trailer as a first defense. I go through a block of bait in each trap about every two months. I've had to repair holes in the underbelly of my trailer where the critters tried to get in. I really don't want to do that any more.
It is important to disinfect any area that mice got into and left urine or feces behind. The Hantavirus is nothing you want to catch.
I had a mouse problem a while back that thankfully wasn't inside the car... I opened the hood of our '06 Mustang GT and noticed the factory insulation around the battery was shreaded. I started searching around the engine bay to see where the mouse might have put it, I was imagining somewhere that might cause a fire. I just happened to spot the opening for the air intake for the engine, so I removed the air filter and lo and behold it was packed full with insulation. It's amazing the car could even run as packed as it was in there...
Back on topic, I have also heard dryer sheets work well. I have them inside our cars while storing them and haven't had a mouse inside.
Rodents have been observed using dryer sheets as nesting material. I don't think they do anything. D-Con has been defanged by the EPA, the new stuff doesn't work either, natch. Before I read about the "new and improved" D-Con, I was looking at buying some on that auction site. I couldn't figure why a four pack was going for 60 bucks. Must have been old stock.

The good stuff is still available for "commercial" and agricultural use just not residential.
You just have to buy a 10 yr supply for the average homeowner need.
Use these traps. They work awesome. Never had one drag it away yet. It mouse season in our house with crops coming off. I have also used the rat version on small red squirrels and it works great too. Just bait with peanut butter in the center. They have to stick their head down in the middle and wham! Every time buddy!
These are the traps I use. You put the bait in the well (center of the red tray). The full "jaw" shape traps more effectively, and then you just flip the handle up, drop the carcass into the trash without ever touching it, and it's good to go after a hot water rinse.
You definitely want to get rid of them. My mother-in-law used to feed deer, geese and ducks in her back yard so she kept tons of feed and seed in her garage. The mice destroyed the wiring on her new Rav4. Had to be replaced. Read somewhere there is soy used in the wiring insulation and they eat that.
