I have had good success with peanut butter on the basic mouse trap. PB slows them down and the trap is able to get them.

I think my car is too petroluim stinky for mice to take any interest. I spray the underside with petro based anti corrosion lube products.
my inside temps during the summer is 115 degrees and my truck sits 95% of the time in the blazing sun.
37 inch tires and 5 inch lift. they might need a pole vault .
i get misquitos inside the cab once in a while and I assume they follow me in
so I guess I need to check my pant legs before I enter my truck for mice hitch hikers.
if I was the OP, I would show my kids what leaving wrappers in the vehicle is cuasing.
maybe even get some hard plastic hanging trash cans.

My buddy uses these on all his cars (3), that are parked in his pole shed and never has a mouse issue. He also has chickens (they love to hunt mice) roaming around.

Get a pop tart with blueberry stuffing smash it into the trap. Or crunch p nut butter get some on a spoon let it set in fridge until hardens up smash it into trap. They will not get away. Those traps they make nowadays are crap. You need to modify them a bit. Out smart the critter. Or get a big black snake and let him be your rodent control.

I used to be in the habit of keeping my window partially open when parked inside my Garage/Shop. Stopped doing that when i was drinking out of my coffee cup while running errands one day and i had forgotten to close the flap on my cup before i got out to walk into Homedepot. Drank from it till i got home and found a mouse inside it when i opened the lid to wash it out. I since don't leave the window open more than 1/8 inch . Never had a mouse in my vehicles since.
