Headliner Help

Trying to fix a horrible headliner for my boss. 1984' F250 XL. Problem is there is no headliner backing board. He had foam backed fabric glued directly to the metal. I assume it was OEM. He also does not have trim above the rear window or along the top of the doors like other 150/250's I have seen. This trim is what holds the backing board in place so I assume I can't go that route?

Do I need to just glue the fabric to the metal like it was originally installed?

No, I wouldn't cement it to the steel best if you go to LMC or NPD and buy the proper covered thick cardboard. I replaced mine but I had the original cardboard, I just cleaned it up and used the foam backed cloth on it with headliner spray glue.

Any treatment other than paint applied directly to the sheet metal isn't factory, that's aftermarket or PO (fabric directly on the steel roof).

Not having the trim necessary to suspend a headliner as per factory = that option wasn't ordered.
