Hi everyone, huge question. I have a 1965 Ford f100 2wd 352ci. I want to put in power steering but instead of buying a donor truck or finding the used parts at a junk yard I want to know if I can just buy the parts brand new for a specific year that would bolt right up. I’m thinking of going with the 76’ ford f100 power steering parts that are brand new. Any ideas of that would be ok or not.
I think you would be much better off getting a donor truck. I seriously doubt that there are enough new old stock parts left in the world to do what your talking about doing.
I put power steering in my '66 2WD F100 FE 7 years ago. I would agree that using a donor truck is preferable, if you can, for all the little things you forget to take off a junkyard truck. I'm pretty sure that there is no one source of new parts that you can buy to do the job. I didn't use a donor truck - I did it the hard way. From Auto Zone I bought a remanufactured P/S pump (their P/N 7007, $40 [2010 prices]), reman Ford/Saginaw P/S gearbox (P/N 7505, $137), P/S pressure hose (P/N 70956, $16), and P/S return hose (P/N 70958, $18). From the junkyard I got an FE engine P/S pump (which I used as a core/trade-in) and mount brackets and hardware, and FE crankshaft pulley, and P/S specific pitman arm. I should have taken the firewall mounted P/S specific "steering column to instrument panel clamp" (Ford P/N C5TZ-3668-B) but I didn't know it.
If you have a 3 on the tree or an automatic transmission there is a lot of work to do on the column and I can't help you with that. If you have a 4 speed, you don't have to do anything to the column case, but you do have to shorten the steering shaft - I've forgotten by how much. While you've got all this apart, it's a good time to replace the column bearings (which were still available from Ford) and maybe the turn signal switch, too. You'll also need a new rag joint. After getting everything installed we went to ops check the system and discovered that the new remanufactured P/S gearbox leaked badly. I was not a happy bunny!!! So we removed it and returned it to Auto Zone, they gave me another one and it (and the pump) has worked fine for 7 years. I know you weren't interested in hearing about the junkyard, but I'm afraid it's either bring the junkyard to you (donor truck) or visit the junkyard yourself. While I was there, I also got a bed light and the underbed spare tire mounting system which my truck was missing so good things can result. Hope this helps.
To answer your question, I got most of my junkyard parts from Jeff's Auto Parts, 2412 S. 4th Ave, South Tucson, phone: 623-2600. As luck would have it, I have a spare FE P/S pump and bracket assembly that I got from Jeff's to possibly use on my '63 Galaxie that didn't get used. You're welcome to it at my cost. I live somewhat close to Tanque Verde and Houghton on the northeast side. I'd be happy to help with advice or show and tell. If interested, let me know. Bob
I'm embarrassed to say that I am an old geezer and a Luddite so I don't have most of what's considered modern technology so I can't send you a text. My phone number (not a cell) is 760-2841. Give me a call. I do have an answering machine through which I screen calls to avoid as much BS as possible. If I miss your call leave your number and I'll call you back. Bob
