I'm building a 67 428ci, I have a 600cfm edelbock carb, but I'm thinking that its probobly to small. I will be runing an edelbrock performer390 manifold and cam, and flow teck headers.Would a 750cfm work better?
Also my 390 had a splash shield in the lifter valley, but the 428 didn't, should I us it in the 428?
I think you are right in going to a 750 cfm carb., I had a 650 Holley double pumper on my 428 and found that it didn't supply enough fuel for "spirited" driving. You didn't mention what it is going in, but FWIW I found the stock FORD fuel line too small to support my engine also. Most F series trucks came with 5/16" fuel lines, way too small for a big motor and a 4 barrel.
The splash shield keeps hot oil off the bottom of the intake which keeps the intake cooler. I would use it.
Moly is a coating on the top ring that holds oil and helps reduce break-in time. I use moly rings all the time, they seat almost instantly and last a long time.
gtex could be right, I thot the Perf cam was bigger than that! Ithink I would go with the 750 just so you don't need to change later when you get more perf. mods.
I would definitely check the fuel line size tho, it didn't even support my 390!!!
The truck that its going in is a 76 f-150 4wd, 33" tires.
I'll check out my fuel line. What were the symtoms of the fuel line being to small? Did you just switch to rubber line? What size?
yep, I've got a 600 edelbrock on my 428 and it's nice for normal driving, but when you stand on it it feels like it's choking. Do yourself a favor and get the 750.
The truck would pull hard up a hill or whatever and then just lay down toward the end of the pull. I basically ruled out other poss. until all that was left was inadequate fuel. The fuel pump is a Carter perf pump, so I knew that wasn't it. I found an article on fuel line sizing versus HP ratings. The stock fuel line was 5/16" and according to the article that would support about 280HP!! T My 390 was at ~380HP, so I was really under sized.
I bought Russell aluminum tubing and braided hose and replaced everything from the pickup in the tank to the carb. with 1/2" tubing and -8 hose. Kinda spendy, but very cool! The article said 7/16" was big enough, but its hard to find that size.
If the truck came with a 4 bbl, it has 3/8" line which might work for mild driving.
I'll try to find the article soon.
