Most of you know I posted asking if the f150 headers summit offers for the 5.4l where the same as the superduty version from Gibson or jab that cost 4-5 times as much. Well it turns out they bolt up with literally no modifications what so ever besides plugging the egr with a pipe plug.
quality of the headers seemed ok, welds looked strong just sloppy. Had to re paint with VHT header paint but that's holding up fine for now.
Install was pretty difficult and very time consuming. None of my studs broke off but 3 stayed in the head on the passenger and 2 on the driver and I left them and re installed the nuts nut used new supplied boos in the other holes.
Sound and performance seems not to much different. Sounds is quiter to me and much smoother sounding. Not as crackly or raspy. Performance seems the same I did notice a more snappy throttle and it revs much easier. But seems the same when actually driving.
One thing I noticed was much hotter floors. I can feel the heat coming through the carpet. Just a little but I never noticed it befor.
Ill do do an update after winter seeing how the hold up. For $200 new you can't beat it.
floor heat is very common.. and a issue since the 1960's.
Summit sells several products to help. floor pads to header rap.
and without a tuner.. little will/has changed.
even more powerful fuel pump,, larger injectors, larger throttle body....and on and on.
yeah I've been looking at a bigger cam and the adapter plates to run a different intake manifold like the victor jr for the 4.6 Then some bigger injectors.
best for acceleration is steeper gears,, 4.30, 4.88. even with a stock engine.
then added power. but do a planned package.. not piece meal..
read car/truck magazines that do a package upgrade for your size engine.. no guessing.
but to make 7,000 pound brick to go faster.. takes a major upgrade in power, 100 plus hp.. or more.
or remove 1,000 pounds out of the truck. aka, plastic windows, fiberglass body panels. etc

horsepower to weight ratio. simple math.
oh yeah it'll never be fast haha. I actually re geared about 6 months ago. Went with 4.88s and I run 35s. I love the 4.88s best bang for my buck yet. I've actually been building engines with my father for years so I know what makes power. I'd love to swap a lightning intake and blower into it but I'm not sure it will clear. More than likely it will be a pro charger but then the bottom end more than likely won't hold or the cast pistons will fail. But with good end gap on the rings and a good tune and good gas she might hold for awhile haha.
Yeah they are the summit truck headers but they just send you pacesetter brand. I'd upgrade to better gaskets than what comes in the box and take the driver header to a hardware and get a pipe plug to plug the EGR fitting if you don't have EGR

This is a pretty good shot of how bad the drivers manifold bends to the collector, it's almost a 90 degree angle and about 1 inch by 2 3/4 on the inside. The headers should flow much better especially for later mods like a cam or intake and some injectors
