A/C Clutch Wheel Alignment Issue

The original factory A/C compressor on my '74 F250 with a 460 had seized up. But the replacement compressor's clutch wheel turned out to be about half an inch too forward of the rest of the pulleys. I ordered a dealer installed clutch wheel and it was half and inch too short of alignment of the pulleys. Finally I ordered a clutch wheel with an inertia ring like the original had but was back to too forward. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I'm out of ideas.

It seems somewhere back in the cobwebs that you only press them on until the pulleys line up.

Thanks for your reply, but the compressor shaft is coned shaped with a wood rift key. The clutch wheel just seats on it, it doesn't press on.

Had the same problem with my 460 swap. Get a clutch for a 460 for a 75 and earlier without the inertia ring and factory ac . Seems they didn't have them on truck applications until the 77-79 maybe. There are at least 3 variations of belt sheave depth on these things on a ford alone in the 73-79 era.

Thanks for the reply, but I started with a replacement factory '74 non inertia wheel and that was too forward of the pulleys. Should I try older?

I had a similar problem when I searched for one for my '76 F-250, 460, factory air. The one I need may be the Four Seasons 47811 (new) or 48811 (reman.) It looks like:

And has
Part Specifications
  • Belt Type:V-Belt
  • Belt Width "IN":0.500
  • Can Size:w/ Coil
  • Coil Voltage:12 Volt
  • Coil?:w/ Coil
  • Color:Gold
  • Connector Type:Butt Connector
  • Description:Clutch Assemblies - New
  • Groove:1 Groove
  • Lead Wire:Lead Wires
  • Material:Steel
  • Meets or Exceeds OEM Specs?:Yes
  • New or Remanufactured:Clutch Assemblies - New
  • Style:206, 209, 210, HG850, HG1000
  • Type:York & Tecumseh
  • Clutch Dia. "IN" Primary:6.000
  • Mount Distance "IN":2.625
Pay attention to the "mount distance". It is the offset of the pulley groove.

I never found out if it was the right clutch. I reused the old one. But it sure looks like the one that's on there.

I came up with that same number looking up a '73 Torino with a 460. I'll give it a try. Thanks again.
