I have a 2003 Navi with 110,000 mi on it. Last year, the original A/C went out and my mechanic replaced it along with hoses and other components. A few months ago, the new A/C went out and he replaced the new compressor and dryer and it worked fine until a few weeks ago and went out again. After a few days, I was driving it to the shop, and then it started working again, so turned around and went home. Then, it went out again. A week later and on the day I was going to take it down to the shop, it started working and has performed flawlessly through today.
What could be causing this to happen? is there a computer module that tells the compressor when to cycle?
First things first, check to make sure the compressor is actually turning when the system is on. Second, gauges need to be connected to know if there is a sufficient refrigerant charge in it.
The A/C worked throughout winter (when needed) and then it stopped working Sunday during our first weekend here in the 90's. Took the Navi to the shop and the freon level was good, and after some time, my mechanic found a broken wire in the wiring harness. He repaired it and now the A/C is working. This is what caused the intermittent operation. My mechanic said the wire harnesses in today's vehicles have very fine wires and with the heat, especially in the desert, they do not last as long as they use to. I asked him what a new harness would cost and he said that harnesses for older vehicles are hard to find and very expensive. I can understand the expense, but do they not make harnesses for the older Navigators anymore? Does anyone have a source besides the junk yard?
