Ready-Aire Compressure Failure

I have a 79 F250 with factory installed A/C. I don't know what the previous owner had in mind, but when I bought the truck, the system had no freon in it, but it was closed up. I decided to replace the condenser (it was pretty dinged up), drier, and compressor. The compressor was a remanufactured Ready-Aire I bought at Kragen. I put the new compressor in and took it all down to a local shop to have it flushed, o-rings changed, filled with oil (including the compressor crankcase), and charged with R12. The initial cost of filling with R12 was not a big deal to me so I wanted to go ahead and use it instead of converting.

It worked great for a couple of days. I went out of town over the weekend and when I came back I looked under the hood and saw some oil was leaking out of the head gasket on the compressor.

At any rate, I'm returning the Ready-Aire and getting a new (not reman) compressor from the A/C shop (that way if it leaks, they're on the hook for it all, including the freon). It's quite frustrating to pay the high price of R12 and have a failure right away, and then to have to recharge the system again. I closed off the valves on the hose so that if there is any freon left in the system I won't lose it.

Does anyone have experience with Ready-Aire compressors? Was this just bad luck, or it is a case of you get what you pay for?

I think your point about you get what you pay for is probably correct. However, you should be able to get your money back on that compressor. See what brand the AC shop uses. Also, check with NAPA about their replacement compressors since most of their business is with repair shops and they especially don't want to be having warranty claims on parts.

the cheap compressors are basicly just repainted, not rebuilt.

Well I have a brand new compressor in the truck now and well, after 3 hours, it still works... I'm sure it will outlast the reman unit.

I'm a little curious - it came in a Visteon box, but on the compressor itself is an aluminum tag with CCI on it. I know CCI took over making the York compressers ages ago (early 80s?). Did Visteon buy out CCI or does Visteon buy from CCI and stick it in their box?
