Just bought an Excursion. It has the V10 and is 2WD. I drove it a couple times the past week. I hooked it up to my camper and am having some issues. When going down the road I noticed it would shutter a little bit around 40 MPH but then it would go away. When pulling up hills about 50-65 it is like it slips when accelerating, sort of like little jerks. There is no drop in RPM when this happens. I have it out of overdrive. But it also does this in overdrive now. I have not seen any lights come one yet. Is my transmission kicking the bucket?
My guess is a bad coil pack. When it happened to me, I thought it was the tranny at first as well.
Does the issue "fix" itself after you punch it and force a downshift? If so, likely coil pack.
Get a code reader and hook it up. The CEL won't come in because once the tranny kicks into a lower gear, the computer thinks the issue is "fixed." However, it will store a code outlining which cylinder you have the misfire on.
Since your truck is new to you, I would go ahead and replace all spark plugs and boots. Replace the coil in the cylinder that is giving you issues (if that is your problem). Buy OEM. Search this forum for the OEM parts at Rockauto (they are rebranded).
My advice would be to replace the coils furthest towards the firewalls if you decide to do boots and plugs because they aren't fun to get to if you run into this issue again.
2nd the coil pack or cracked boot issue. Feels just like the tranny is going. Once you pull the cops, it'll be pretty clear which boots are cracking at the bottom (near the plug).
i had this exact issue its a bad coil pack chances are number 5 the engine doesnt sound like its runnign when when driving but at certain speeds it has a odd shake/pulsing
Thanks everyone for you responses, you are all awesome. After I posted and sulked for a while, I hooked up my Genisys to it. I found multiple misfire code and cylinder 4 and 9. I had some coil packs left over from my 2001 escape so I just changed the boot on them and stuck them on it. No change. I then used my spark tester to test the coils and they were good. I then took the spark plug out if nine and it looked horrible. I changed all the spark plugs and it fixed the issue. Hugh relief. These plugs had not been changed in a while it looks like. The truck has 207k on it. Again, thanks everyone for your quick responses.
Glad that you got it sorted out!
What torque did you set the new plugs to? Factory spec for the '00 is only 11 ft/lbs, which is considered by many to be too loose and a major contributor to the blown plug issue.
Did you also replace the bots and springs? Old boots degrade and develope tiny cracks that bleed voltage and eventually lead to misses.

What's your recommended torque spec Wes ??
I have the '05 which calls for 17 ft/lbs with the seven spark plug threads, on that I used 32 ft/lbs with a little bit of never-seize on the threads. From what I have read it seems the early ones with fewer threads are doing pretty well at keeping the plugs in the heads with 22/28 ft/lbs, and a recheck after a couple thousand miles to ensure they are still holding tight.
