hi , i just bought in to this diesel theory.....literaly, see my new truck pics. anyway there is some smoke ,hard to see through the tint, but people do react to it so i guess ,and they seem to like the smoke too so i guess its there. anyway, THERE ISNT A SMOKE LEVEL ADJUSTMENT **** ANY WHERE on this thing ? wha the
got it , the first thing i do is check the coolant system to trouble shoot for poor fuel milage and or excessive smoke. Not the fuel pump, which btw i still havent identified yet !
I bought a HAYNES book for the diesel enging includes the 6.9 and says i need a special tool for making that adjustment. It looks like a oil filter wrench, and it seems we can turn the pump while its running to affect the ignition timing.Dynamic and static !
Yes they make a tool for turning the pump, but it isn't nesessary. The hardest part is loosening the bottom two nuts that hold it on. The wrench of choice is an angled open end. Then use a big pair of channel locks or cresent wrench to turn the pump. To advance the pump move the top towards the fuel filter, not too much, just a tad. Without an expensive timing set up you won't be able to tell what it's running at. Tighten at least the easier to reach bolts and start it up. If the rattle is too loud you probably want to back it off some until you can get a timing tool on it.
I bought a slick setup from the Mac tool guy, they call it a diesel pulse adapter. You clamp a wire on the number one inj. line and it gives you a little bar to clamp a regular timing light on. It was just under $100
can you give me more detail on the "tuneing by ear " theory, and will i have to ever test the fuel myself for things like bacteria and fuel quality ? I do hear too much rattle and it seems too rich.Does rich mean lots of smoke ? Now, keep in mind rich might be what we want considering the REVS i am seeing here.Small tires and like 4.10 gears comtribute. i will leave this thng alone probly but it would be nice to see less smoke, and BTW it is getting harder to start too. My first winter ahead, I plan to just cross my fingers with this truck.
Yep timing by ear takes a good ear. I do mine by ear then follow up with timing meter (I used to take mine in) but everytime I did it was always dead on. Now I have Diesel Pulse Adapter like Spectramac does.
When timing by ear advance it slightly by ear then lock her down. I normally only tighten two of the nuts, leaving the bottom one on the pass side loose (as this is the biggest pain to reach) then drive her and listen closely. If you get a slight ping at 2k and above (have to listen closely, and know how an IDI is supposed to sound) then back off just a smidgen until the ping stops. Windows up, fan off, RADIO OFF, and just listen. The Ping you are hearing is the fuel starting to burn too soon. Again this takes a good ear and you HAVE TO KNOW what you listening to. For the inexperinced take it to a shop, if the timing is advanced too far you can run into overheating problems as well as other nasties.
