injection pump timing

Can I time the injection pump myself or does it have to be done by a shop. My 6.9 has a lot of white smoke. I would like to see if that is the problem.

Coolant combustion? Do you mean head gasket problems?

yes it could be that or intake manifold, heated fuel separater. try opening fuel tubes one at a time and see how engine acts. also observe smoke issue.

I can't imagine a head gasket problem though. The truck has plenty of power. I can dog the truck hard and the smoke will go away. But it does come back shortly. The smoke does smell like fuel.

may not be head gasket, test cooling system and see if smoke is heavier.

pressurize the radiator to limit and see. Most radiator shops will do it.

Sounds like a injector problem to me... like luckild said crack them open one at a time.. also when one goes bad you will hear a "diesel ping" if the ping goes away when you crack one.. thats your problem child. Make sure too when replacing it that you cleam the injector seat good... or have some one else do it... the actual tool is about $120 off the Matco guy (it's a OTC Tool brand) and $90 through Ford. The ping is created due to the increased pressure on the injector... the normal pressure in the injector is 1800 psi... but a dirty/clogged/stickin/malfunctioning one who knows what the psi is.

look into the injectors, injector cleaner might as well be dish soap if it is dirty enough to clog it you might as well fork out the money to get new ones... it's past the point any cleaner can do for it bro... that and take it ad try pressure testin the cooling system to be on the safe side... usually free or for a minimal chage they'll ceck it its always good to make sure if it is good... but if you havent noticed a change in the level of anitfreeze proley a injector prob. Pump timing any way is something some one else is going to have to check unless you got the meter to check it with to do it percisely.
