2 barrel 460??

Ok, I know this isn't a truck but maybe someone knows. I was looking at a 78 Town Car for sale and it has a 460 with a 2 bbl. carb. Was that ever offered? I can't find anything saying it was. I know the 78 had 400s too, California only had a 400 and 460 49 state optional that year so there were some shuffling going on. It looks unmolested but I suppose it could be a 429 intake. thanks

Question

You are sure the engine was not a 400? It came through with a 2V, all 460's were 4V.

Not a 400. Still has the 1978 460 emissions sticker on the valve cover. 7 valve cover bolts, thermostat on the intake.

...hmmph...

Are you interested in the car? When you go back, try and get the intake Casting I.D. No. and CARB Tag No.

Has to be a retro-fit but YOU NEVER SAY NEVER regarding FOMOCO...

OH CRAP!

That VECI Decal will tell you if a 2V or 4V engine (how assembled).

Yeah, I might buy it, after I hear it run. Car has 110,000 miles. My eyes aren't good enough to read the engine sticker, had my nephew look where I was pointing and read the engine family and year. The for sale sign says it's a 79, not. I'll check the numbers, not that it matters but just curious if I had found another one of those never say never Ford anomalies.

I've never heard of a 2V 460 but I do remember seeing an Olds 455 with factory 2V carb so you never know.

The only thing I can think of...

A previous owner put a 2V intake on from a 429 2V FORD/MERC to try and save fuel.

olds actually had a lot of 455 2bbl cars back in the day and no one wanted them so they became a source for 455 engines for whatever...

did ford do the same? would not surprise me, what was in the larger 5-15 ton trucks? I know GM kept their big blocks governed and large 2bbls so its likely the same happened...

That would be the 370/429 MT 385 Series.

You know, when you go to look at an older car such as this, it is hard to determine what has been done to it.

Exclamation

That year LINC 460 came through with a MOTORCRAFT 4350 (aka ROCHESTER) @13MPG.

I bet (if the engine is original) that is the reason for the 2V...
