How do I know if it is a 460?
Hello,
I want to buy a 460 tomorrow. I would like to know if it is a 460 or not. I am pretty sure it is a 79, but it could be a 77. Is has different valve covers on it, and intake. The intake says performer 460 but I don't know if it actually is a 460. It is blue. Came out of a dually Ford Ranger (4 door). Is it a 460 or 400? How can I visually tell? What about the vin, will that tell me? Thanks

A 460 and 400m are completely different motors. If your manifold says "performer 460" on it the it is a 385 series motor. This meaning that it is either a 460 or 429. If it is the original motor out of that truck then it is a 460. 429's were not offered as a motor in that truck. A 400m and 351m have the same bell housing pattern as the 460/429 but that is about it. The intake manifolds between a 460/429 and 400m/351m are not interchangable at all.

Naw, in fact, many engines were built by Ford of Canada throughout the years... As in, the 'Windsor', made at the Windsor, Ontario plant, but sold in many vehicles throughout north america.
The only 'exclusive' Canadian vehicles were the Mercury pickup trucks, which to my knowledge were not sold in the US. There were cars in the US that I have never seen in Canada, either, like the later Mercyry Capri, the convertible car with 4 cylinder engine. I think they are cool looking. Canada got the Mustang-based Capri late 70's early 80's, but when the design changed, it seemed to stay in the US. Not sure if it was because of more stringent safety controls in Canada or not... (Canada got daytime running lights in all cars years ago, for instance...)
Sorry, too much information! lol The 460 was likely always made in the US.
