460 in a 4x4 ?
i have a friend selling a 79 250 4x4. iwant to buy it. the truck is about 100 miles away and he does not know anything about it. I could have sworn that years back when he was still driving it that when i had to jump start him one day i popped the hood and seen 460 7.5. on the emisson decal or so i think. 460 just stuck in my head with that truck. i have read apost that said there was no 460 in 79. the listings for part catalogs through napa and auto zone show 460 as an available engine. autozone shows it was only produced in 1% of the79's. I hope it really is a 460. i will buy it either way, 351m or 400m, i just want to know if it could be a 460. as far as i know the truck is all original. his family owned it since new.

In 1979 the 460's were in two wheel drive trucks and Econoline vans, but not in a 4x4.
1983 was the first year the 460 was factory in a 4x4 and only in an F-250.

those guts are right, but f-250/350's have retrofitted 460's. i have a 78 crewcab with 460. there are quite a few distinguishing charecteristics that will allow you to tell the 460 from the 351m/400. the sticker on the breather is not one of them. let me know if i can help. if you want that 460 bad enough, it's not to painful a swap and there are kits they simpl;ify it.
