first let me say I have done a search but wasnt able to find a thread that really applied to my situation . I found a lot that goes either way on the subject of reliability of the V10 .
Here's my situation . I am needing a reliable large SUV for my family . No real towing less the occasional 3000# classic car roller . I drive about 8 K miles a year.
I found one that meets the $ factor and seems to be well maintained but has 290K miles . Its a fleet vehicle from new, all records and the seller is the owner of the company and he is still driving it about 150 miles a day . Seems like it a safe bet but that still seems like high miles .
Looking for input if this being a fleet truck would be a good reliable option even with those miles .
I have a 2000 F250 with the V-10 and it is pushing 225000 miles. Although it uses a quart or so of oil between changes it runs pretty good. I would bet that those miles on that Ex are highway miles. If the price is right I'd seriously look at it. What year is it?

Really? The V-10 is just about as rock solid reliable as the legendary 7.3 PSD, but you found "a lot" of discussion on it's lack of reliability?

There are still many factors to consider here.....
Just how good of a price is it and how tight is your budget?
How handy are you to keep up with the maintenance and repairs that an older vehicle will be needing?
290k is a lot of miles for the 6.8, typically folks feel pretty comfy to run them into the 300k mark. But has it seen a lot of idling hours in those 290k miles? With regular prolonged periods of idling the engine will have more wear than the odometer shows, think Police or Fire type unit that sits idling at scenes.
Check out the transmission fluid condition and trans function and performance very closely on a test drive, replacing a 4R100 can get expensive.
One benefit of the gas engines is the relatively low cost of replacement engines when needed (compared to the long lasting but expensive diesels). So even if it gives up on you in a year it can be replaced for a couple/few grand depending on if you go used/rebuilt/new.
Condition of the body and frame, rust can be a deal breaker for many folks, are you prepared to live with or deal with serious rust repair if needed?

price is $3k - 2000 limited / eddie bauer. stock not lifted or big ol mud tires . kept in a heated garage no leaks or drips ( according to the seller )

yup ive seen quite a few posts about plugs blowing out of maifolds and related plug issues , dropping pistons , and a few had valve issues but with out much background info .

doing maintenance isnt an issue for me . I dont know if it was left idle for extended periods . it sounds like the guys that owns it owns a vending repair company and just drove it all over gods green earth . it was maintained by a fleet company that also does his other trucks for his service people. Repairs were made based on miles broken or not in addition to any needed repairs .
Right now rust isnt my favorite thing , but as long its doesnt leave me and the family stranded rust or rust repair is OK for me .... frame rust through not so much.
I'll take a close look at the trans / transfer case . He didnt mention if the trans had be open yet . Ill take a look at the service records and see too .
i bought a v10 earlier this year. once i bought it i changed the plugs, made sure all the coils were firing nicely, changed the oil, flushed the trans etc etc etc.
this past saturday it clicked and then a big old pop and bang. shot oil and water everywhere. 176k miles
im looking for a 7.3 now. i wish i went 7.3 from the beginning
I would figure you are buying a $3000 truck. That's always a crap shoot. Some might go another 100K without a hiccup, and others might break the next day. Condition is far more important than miles at this price point.
It has been so long since I had to work on my truck I am not sure I can remember how to turn a wrench. I did overhauls on my first two ford trucks. Did the work myself. They were burning oil and had all the acessories and hoses replaced before the overhaul. This truck 99% is original. I finally did the vacuum elbow a year ago. Otherwise all accessories alternator, starter, water pump, all hoses etc are original. I replaced the fuel pump when it failed getting the RV for a trip to Colorado about five years ago and I replaced the A/C clutch two years ago. I have not even topped of the refrigerant in at least 7 years. I am afraid to disturb it. :-}
With that many miles, if it were me, I would start a savings program for a Ford Motorcraft remanufactured engine. V10s are great engines, but the life expectancy is limited, vs. the diesel.
Good luck.
