Need quick pre-purchase advice today...please

Hi all,

Please let me know which of these Excursions you would recommend, I need to make a decision today.

1. 2000, X, 4x4, Limited, V10, 77k miles for $12,500 (local pick up) 2nd owner, once was lease vehicle.

2. 2000 X, 4x4, Limited, V10, 43k miles for $14,500 (fly to CA - 800 mile drive back) original owner, has small dent. Additional $500 travel costs.

3. 2000 X, 4x4, Limited, V10, 15k miles for $14,500, (fly to Chicago - 2100 mile drive back) original owner. Additional $1200 travel costs.

Right now I'm thinking the cheaper local one, I test drove the local one, it drove ok, pulled to the left on braking and had a clunk in driveline when stopping. Other than that, who really knows, the whole thing could go to pot right after I buy it.

Any thoughts, recommendations??

Time is of the essence, I need to pay for the local rig tomorrow or fly to CA or IL tomorrow.

Thanks for any input.

Tony

Tony1790,

If I were making the purchase, I would buy the 2000 Ex with 15k for 14,500 and drive it back. I would make it alittle vacation if you could. With only 15k on it, it is a very good deal and very very low miles. In fact, it is barely broke in. I would just ask why it had so few miles on it.

These rigs will go over 200k with the proper maint. and the 15k is nothing.

I have an 02 Ex V-10 with 31k on it and I just love it..

Good Luck and let us all know what you decide on.

Thanks Big Rig,

I sure like the sounds of the 15k Excursion, it is located near Chicago (thanks to SmokinJohn for the tip). That Chicago area is very cheap for Ex's. There is another one with 5k miles for $17k private owner. Lots of great prices there, it's just 2100 miles from where I'm located near Seattle.

I couldn't find the one your referring too Tony, but I did see the 5000 mile one. He has an OBO next to the price, maybe try making that person an offer? Maybe I'll pick that baby up myself if I could find someone to take my X with 100,000 miles on it, lol again.

SmokinJohn,

The one with 15k miles, they're asking $19,500, I just got off the phone with him to reconfirm the price. Well one of us has a faulty memory, now he wants to get $18,350......vice $14,500, it seems he's went to a dealer and thinks that will be the trade in value. Crap, scratch that one off the list. Can't blame him though, I'd do the same!!

The 5k mile one for $17k doesn't have an email address and won't answer or return the phone calls I've sent. SmokinJohn, That is not a bad idea you have, I'd have no problem if you bought that truck. It's for sale, you're local and I'm not. Only thing, it's a V10 which is what I want, I thought you are a diesel guy. Either way, go for it, I doubt I'll be able to get a hold of him and make it there before it's sold. That's a great price.

That leaves 2 remaining choices,

CA with a 800 mile return trip for 2000 Ex, V10, Limited, 4x4 w/41k miles for $14,500. Travel ($500 + $1290) tax = $16,290 with tax and travel

WA with a 30 mile trip, 2000 Ex, V10, Limited, 4x4, w/77k miles for $12,500. That'll be $13,600 with tax.

Ultimately I know the choice is mine, but advice from current Excursion owners and smarter people than I, is most welcome and appreciated!

Are the 36k miles difference worth the $2,700 difference in price?? I should be able to put after market brakes, new upper and lower ball joints, door actuators and spark plugs for $2700, no? Anything else that I should be planning on replacing? The only big ticket items that I can think of is the tranny and flying spark plugs, but you don't know IF or WHEN those things might happen.

Ok, dear Excursion Experts, I'm down to 2 immeditate choices, whaddya think???

Based soley on the facts provided, which is little, You couldn't go wrong with either one. Take the local. 77K on a 2000 is ok. I had no hesitation picking up my 01 X limited 4x4 with 92K on it. I bought is for $15,200 and felt like I got a good deal. For me it is purely a tow vehicle. Boat to the lake and toys to the desert. Soon to be toy hauler and toys to the desert. Just do you homework when looking and testing the truck. Get your carfax. Take it to a local shop and spend the money on a check. My last ford 92 explorer ran to 205K before I sold it. This V10 is built much better.
Been 6 months and no issues *knocking on wood* other than filling tank and oil change.
My 2 cents. Good Luck

I once went over 1000 for the right vehicle. Traveling is a great bonus if you can work in the vacation and have fun. It is a holiday weekend. I used a rental vehicle and dropped it off at the airport in the city I bought the Bronco. Only $100 for a one way rental from Alabama to NYC. Of course, we drove there straight through so it was only a one day rental.

I like the sounds of the lower mileage one but why the low mileage? The lease vehicle with 2 owners...a little leary. Lease vehicles are not taken care of as well generally especially if they are just to be returned. We leased work trucks and the maintenance on a 2 year lease for us is not important at all. The last 2 lease vehicles that were manager's vehicles were bought and resold for profit quickly after the lease termination. Ford made us a couple good offers, even reduced the lease buy out option so we could not say no. Purchase at $17K sold at $19200 when book value was around 21K. Nice $2000 reduction in lease costs.

Good luck and take a trip.

People can so deceptive,

On the 2000, X, V10, 4x4, Limited with 41k miles at $14,500, I found this on ebay, there was only one photo. I kept asking for a phone call and/or more photo's to verify the condition of her rig. The ebay listing said a few minor scratches and a minor dent.

I just saw the photo's now that she's relisted on ebay, and no she didn't call or tell me she was relisting it, even thought we were in the good faith bargaining process.

The dent is a big ol dent, left front fender, a big ol set of gouges on the right rear quarter panel, broken front grill. Granted, I can get those items repaired, but they are far from minor scratches and a minor dent. Anyway, I'm down to the choice of the local rig. At $12,500, for a 2000, Ex, V10, 4x4, Limited with 77k miles, I think that I can repair or replace anything that breaks on it for less money than I'd spend on a newer rig.

I'll let you know once I acutually get it, won't be til tomorrow. I'm still looking in the meantime.

Thanks

Tony

Thanks for the input, I'm all for traveling, I'd go just about anywhere for good enough deal, but there is a law of diminishing returns the farther that I have to go. I just wish this part of the country wasn't so danged expensive.

They all sounded a little pricey to me, or do they get higher prices out west?

I would also agree on the local purchase, however,,,,, Having lived in southern California for 12 yrs, the vehicles there are in great shape. As long as they don't live near the Beach! They have NO rust, and I have seen a great # of them for sale. use the zip 92631 or 92675 and a 100mi radius, that is Mission Viejo, and San Juan Capistrano, usually the soccermoms buy them cause they are the in thing, and then a yr or 2 later they want the next "in" thing. We have an 02 X Limited 4x 7.3, w/80k when it has 200k plus, I will make a trip down there.
