In talking with local dealers, it seems the value of X-plan is almost nil now. They're offering better than X-plan pricing. The odd part, as I understand it, is that if they sell a vehicle X-plan, the dealer does get some reimbursement.
What's the best way to negotiate with X-plan? Ignore it? or is there a way to work with the dealer to get a better deal and have them benefit too?
My opinion is X-plan may be useful in some markets where dealers don’t deal on the trucks like other areas, but if you look around you can find dealers discounting trucks a lot more than the discount X-plan gives. This may not apply to the 18’s yet but it will soon.
If you read these forums, most have been able to get better pricing than x plan. There are always some dealers who do not discount and if you must deal there, then x plan is applicable.
In my search for a F450 on the West Coast, I found that very few dealers actually had the vehicle, unlike F350's which seem to be plentiful.
Even when I contacted the East Coast volume dealers, they didn't have a lot of F450's in stock, especially at this time - the model year end. And dealers knew the F450's are scarce, so they price accordingly.
I ultimately got a somewhat better quote from Koons, but it was only a few hundred bucks better than the x-plan deal I got from a West Coast dealer. Considering I don't have to pay shipping charges nor do I need to drive the vehicle cross country, the deals came out essentially even.
One advantage of the x-plan is it limits document fees to $100. So it immediately cuts out the dealers that try and game you for a few hundred extra bucks.
Now on a vehicle that there's more stock on, such as a F250/350, I know for a fact that you can beat the x-plan price by a mile.
In my area it can be a wash, what I like about the x plan is they have to show you the invoice. The white paper directly from Ford. No hassle and limited fees, period.
You still get all the rebates and stuff as well.
It has been my experience in this area with the x plan I come out ahead, but just a few bucks is all.
When I purchased my truck, the internet pricing shown online was FAR lower than what the X-Plan was. If memory serves the internet price was to the tune of about $5,000 less than what X-Plan was going to offer.
I honestly think X-Plan is no longer "a perk".....

In my area dealers include every rebate possible in order to show the lowest price. 99.9% of the population don't qualify for all of them.

You can't negotiate with Xplan. It is a set price and the dealer must charge you Xplan if you are using it.

Not possible. X-plan is under invoice if the truck is over $60,000 MSRP. You get the same rebates whether on or off X-plan which then leaves holdback of about $2,000 to negotiate if one can. So you can get around $2,000 under X-plan IF the dealer gives up their whole holdback.
No way you are ever getting $5,000 less then an x-plan deal with rebates.
I agree with the comment that the X plan is no longer a perk. I like the simplicity of the X-plan, but think that the reality is the simplicity leads to higher prices - at least in my area.
What has me a bit puzzled, is I though t that the dealer get a specific reimbursement from Ford on each x-plan vehicle. If they're willing to sell below X-plan, I have to assume their profit is lower. Seems to be a program that's past its time?

Ive bought over 50 new cars and trucks in the last 50 years. I've bought over a dozen Fords with x-plan since 1999.
I always only negotiate out the door price.
My last 2 F150s I first got out the door x-plan price then used that number to negotiate $1000 below that without x-plan.
When I bought my 17 F350 the best I could do was X-plan. I also had to drive 150 miles to find one equipped like I wanted. I was able to have the dealer take my 16 F150 in trade and sell it to a buyer I found at my price that saved me sales tax.
