It's getting time for me to drop the pan on the Aerostar and change out the filter, but I'm not sure what kind of transmission we have (93 3.0 shorty RWD). I figured while I was digging around I would put in a shift kit if one is available. Anyone know of one?
All Aerostars use the A4LD transmission, however there are different versions for 3.0 vs 4.0, short vs extended, etc. The differences are in the internal components. They all share the same case.
As to shift kits, I don't have any experience with these.
I am thinking shift kit for my wife's '92 3.0 shorty aero. B&M makes one that hooks up externally so you don't have to drop the pan. I might go with that or have my mechanic install the Transgo kit next time we change the fluid (won't be for a couple years). I hate the way this tranny won't stay in the gear you want. Double downshifts. Down, up, down. Up, down, up. All kinds of strange shifting. Funny thing is my wife says it never happens to her.
I saw it in either the JEGS or SUMMIT RACING catalog for the A4LD (or whatever the aerostar one is) tranny and it was somewhere around $60. I think it is electronic and has three settings: stock, street, and strip. You could find JEGS or SUMMIT on the net. Not sure how well it works, but expect the valve body kits are a bit nicer. Still the three settings could be fun.
It is JEGS and it is called the Shiftplus Electronic Shift Improver. It has three levels--stock, firmer, much firmer--which you can switch between anytime. Says good for performance, towing, and RV. JEGS catalog number 130-70383 for GM(some number) and Ford A4LD @ only $42.99.
I put an electronic shift improver on my motorhome, but it dosen't have a controller. It was about $250 from Bankspower.com It did make the shifts fast and firm under load.
I am thinking about getting this B&M (can barely make out the B&M on the part in the JEGS catalog) shift improver for my wife's Aerostar, which has 98,000 miles on it. If anybody does it, let us know how it works out, how easy to hook up, and how you like te performance.
Frankly I am a stick shift guy and if stuck with the automatic in the Aerostar would be tempted to convert it to manual valve body with a floor shifter, but there is only so much you can do the the wife's van.
