Hello, ive been trying to figure out a shifting issue with a recently aquired truck i have. Its gunna be a long read so bear with me. 97 f250 powerstroke diesel. The truck will start out in 1st and will not shift to second unless throttle os featherd. Once in second it will completely skip 3rd and go right to lockup od. Trying to turn od off on shifter does nothing. Yes shifter does light up od off. No it does not flash ever. Reverse works good as well as manual 1 and 2. Driving in od it will not kick down either. Im at a loss. I have already, hooked up my snap on scanner. There are no codes at all. Watched trans data while driving. Ecm commands 2nd way before it actually will try to shift. Ecm also commands 3rd when it should be but trans goes right to 4th. Let me know what your thoughts are, i dont feel like the trans is toast. Guy i got it from was driving it like this the last 2 years. Fluid looks decent and nothing alarming in pan. Thank you !!!
Look to see if the Barro sensor is still installed, under the dash. Since you have a scanner should be easy to view the data, should be the same as MAP at idle but would think it would throw a code. Many on here have reported very hard shifting issues when it was just that sensor causing the issue.
Im thinking the problem is in the valve body, after all the ecm wants the truck to shift. If there was a bad sensor like the ebp or baro wouldnt the ecm make the trans do wierd things? On the scanner everything looks like its supposed to. Soooo my question now is which valve in the valve body is most likely to hang out on 1-2, and completely skip 3rd? Idk valve body is out and on the bench. Looking through it right now. Thanks guys
Could be, I'm no transmission expert so can only give you general knowledge as reported by others. If you have the pan still off check the filter o-ring. If PO changed the filter the o-ring tends to stick in place so with new filter you now have two of them there. This will cause leaking and low pressures as reported by other members.
Did you ever figure it out im goimg through the exact same thing amd I'm going crazy please answer lol
Hey man! I just finished solving my "e4od shifting weird." ordeal myself. The best tool for weird or late shifts is gonna be a scanner. Get a decent bluetooth scanner, and download Forscan. Run all the tests and check for error codes. I recommend Forscan because it can read DTC codes as well as normal codes.
My issue was hard shifts, a new VSS, MLPS, and Baro sensor solved my issues.
I know it's been a while but figured I would post what was wrong to help others. I swapped out my solenoid pack and it was indeed the problem. Been driving the truck for probably 2 years trouble free.
